Good practice of support of volunteering in the Municipality of Kekava, Latvia

“Volunteer of the Year” celebration of volunteers is held every year

Practice is ongoing, starting in 2013.

It is organized by the State Employment Agency of Latvia which is officially responsible institution of organizing voluntary work. Kekava municipality also participates in this campaign and officially invites to promote the best local volunteers to the state campaign.

How is the solution implemented?

The purpose of honoring volunteers is to thank those citizens and organizations who donate their time to voluntary work for the benefit of society, promoting the interest and involvement of citizens and organizations in volunteering. The tribute will be held in Latvia for the tenth year already.

This year, a total of 112 applications were submitted, the majority of which, 57, were received from Riga and municipalities near Riga.

In what local context has it been applied?

Any resident of Latvia, non-governmental organization, state or local government institution could nominate volunteers or organizers for the “Volunteer of the Year 2023” award.

What difference has it made?

It is important to motivate volunteers by official recognition and ceremony. Even the awards are not very valuable in the sense of monetary means it’s a method supported by the state and in terms of meaningfulness it’s having publicity.
